Finnish Winter 2007

Darkness at noon? Not quite, since the Finns know how to charge through the snow and cold. Where do ou think saunas and fireplaces come from? The last trip to Finland for Bjorklund & Fox happened in January, in the thick of winter. The images below are just a few of the sights of a three-week road trip in the land of reindeer.

We traveled to Finland Jan 24-Feb 7th 2007 to play a song at the Venla Gala, Finland’s annual television awards (Very similar to the Emmy Awards in the US). It was a live television broadcast that was seen by well over half a million people in Finland! We performed “Leroy” with Irina singing and playing the musical saw and Peter playing mandolin and harmonica. Our song was the only live music on the show, and was a great success with both the live and the viewing audience. Thanks again to producer Johanna Steinbeck and the YLE network for having us and for doing such a high class show!
After the gala, we played several live dates in Finland. In Helsinki, we played a private party for Iittala, the Finnish company that is one of the world’s leading proponents of modern design. Iittala is particularly well known for its hand blown glass. We also played a show at Kuudes Linja, a hip club in the Kallio neighborhood of Helsinki. We shared the bill with our good friends The Latebirds, wonderfully soulful Helsinki based band.
We also took a trip to Finland’s Swedish speaking west coast. We played in Pietarsaari at After Eight, a really wonderful place with an attached café and a hostel. We had a memorable dinner prepared by the chef there, and the sold out show was one of our best ever. The audience was very attentive and very quiet – you could literally hear a pin drop. Perhaps that was due to the fact that it was a no-alcohol venue…After the show we relaxed in a really nice traditional wood fired sauna. Finland at its best! The following night we played in Vaasa at Club Doo-Bop, a basement jazz club. It was another sold out show and with an enthusiastic crowd, and the best sounding piano ever.
We had the pleasure to play with three great musicians form Finland: Mikko Makela on Bass, Antii Lahtinen on Drums and Veera Rallio on Violin.
